Welcome to the PTO's new website! Please be patient while we work out all of the kinks.
My name is Robin Gipson and I am so excited and honored to serve our Orono school family as this year's PTO President. I want to thank you for expressing your interest in the PTO by searching our website. This is the home base for learning more about what we do and how to get involved. As we all know, Orono has received numerous awards and accolades for its academic achievements and Character Counts program. A large part of Orono's success is you-our amazing community of parents. With your help, the PTO enhances the educational opportunities offered to our children by coordinating volunteers and fundraising. It does not take much time to make a meaningful impact-just a few hours augments our children's experience. Not to mention your kids will love to see you helping out at school!
The PTO's reach is vast-it touches virtually all areas of our children's education. With so many varied programs, there is something for everyone. Some examples:
Character Counts: PTO’s Recess Rock Stars program fosters an inclusive and positive recess experience that promotes Orono’s six pillars of character.
Art Enrichment: PTO’s Art Adventure program in Schumann and the Artist Residencies in the Intermediate School (IS) further students’ appreciation and exposure to art in various forms.
World Languages: PTO’s funding of a native Spanish speaking amity teacher enhances our children’s language experience and understanding of a different culture.
Science and Technology: PTO’s funding of the IDEA Lab in Schumann allows K-2 students to work with age appropriate robotic, science and engineering tools. PTO volunteers assist teachers in exploring this technology in the classroom.
Nature and the Environment: PTO funds Naturalist visits and provides volunteers to coordinate the program.
Physical Education: The PTO regularly purchases new physical education equipment and last year funded the two new Ga Ga pits located in the IS playground.
Teacher Appreciation and Support: The PTO provides dinners to teachers during conferences, collects cookies for a holiday cookie exchange for staff, plans various activities during teacher appreciation week and coordinates room leads for each teacher.
Building OUR Community: The PTO plans movie nights, coffees, dinners, and speaker events for our parents and students.
The PTO also funds classroom parties, field trips, and provides stipends for our teachers to purchase classroom supplies among
I encourage you to follow the links to these programs on our website to learn more about these and other PTO activities. We need many, many volunteers to continue the success of these programs. We are only as strong as our volunteers! The benefits of volunteering is enormous and worthwhile-it does not take much time to make a positive impact on our school and kids.
These programs are of course not free. They need not only volunteer time, but money. The PTO raises most of its funds through dues and 2 large fundraisers: Read-A-Thon and Fun Fest. If you are able, please pay your dues and participate in one of our fundraisers either through volunteering or contributing.
Finally, please feel free to email or call me or any other officer with questions, concerns, and/or suggestions. Your feedback helps us improve our service and schools. I look forward to a great year working with all of you!
