THE ORONO K-5 PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION (PTO) WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME ALL OF OUR FAMILIES BACK TO SCHOOL! THE PTO IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION CONSISTING OF PARENT VOLUNTEERS WORKING WITH THE SCHOOLS TO ENHANCE THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES OF OUR K-5 STUDENTS THROUGH FUNDRAISING AND BY COORDINATING VOLUNTEERS.

FIRST AND FOREMOST- OUR DEEPEST APPRECIATION AND GRATITUDE TO THE TEACHERS, SUPPORT STAFF, BUILDING STAFF, PRINCIPALS, ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY OF THE ORONO SCHOOLS FOR THEIR STELLAR JOB IN GETTING OUR CHILDREN BACK TO THE CLASSROOM AND LEARNING.  FROM THE SWIFT ACTION OF LAST SPRING MOVING FROM IN-CLASS TO FULL DISTANCE LEARNING TO THE MONTHS OF PLANNING AND PROCEDURE TO ACCOMMODATE ALL OF OUR LEARNERS WHETHER IT BE FROM HOME TO IN CLASS INSTRUCTION: NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THEIR TIRELESS DEDICATION TO OUR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION.  THANK YOU!!!

THIS YEAR IS GOING TO PRESENT CHANGES, CHALLENGES, AND OBSTACLES FOR ALL OF US TO WORK THROUGH TOGETHER; BUT AS A COLLECTIVE UNIT, WE CAN ALL GET THROUGH THIS DIFFICULT YEAR AND COME OUT EVEN STRONGER THAN WE WERE BEFORE! #WECANDOHARDTHINGS

AS A REMINDER- ORONO SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS ASKED FOR NO IN-PERSON VISITORS TO THE CAMPUS THIS YEAR TO HELP LIMIT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. DUE TO THAT NEW POLICY AND THE ABRUPT ENDING OF IN-PERSON MEETINGS LAST YEAR, WE WERE UNABLE TO VOTE IN A NEW BOARD FOR THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR.  WITH THE GUIDANCE OF PAST PRESIDENTS AND AN EMERGENCY MEETING THIS SUMMER, THE BOARD VOTED ON MAINTAINING THE CURRENT BOARD UNTIL WE CAN RESUME IN PERSON VISITS AND COMMUNITY MEETINGS.

HERE IS AN UPDATE ON OUR CURRENT ROLES ON THE PTO BOARD THIS SCHOOL YEAR: LIBBI RICE WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE AS PRESIDENT, WITH MELANIE HERRERA CONTINUING IN THE VICE PRESIDENT ROLE. KATHLEEN VOSSEN WILL MOVE UP AS OUR TREASURER, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF NATALIE WILLIAMS AS PAST TREASURER.  BETH WATKINS WILL STEP INTO THE ROLE OF SECRETARY WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF KATIE HOLLERMAN AS PAST SECRETARY.

FINANCIALLY, OUR BUDGET WILL LOOK VERY DIFFERENT THAN IT HAS IN YEARS PAST. WE HAVE CUT ALL IN-PERSON EVENTS SUCH AS FUN FEST, BINGO NIGHT, GAME NIGHT, AND CONFERENCE MEALS.  THIS YEAR, WE NEED TO STAY APART TO STAY SAFE!

WITH THE REDUCTION OF IN-PERSON EVENTS PROVIDING MORE FLEXIBILITY AND FREEDOM IN FUND ALLOCATIONS, THE PTO WAS ABLE TO OFFER A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF COVID RELIEF FUNDS TO EACH OF OUR BUILDINGS. THE PTO GRANTED BOTH SCHUMANN AND THE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL AN ADDITIONAL $25,000 EACH TO USE AT THEIR DISCRETION FOR ANY COVID RELATED EXPENSES THAT MAY ARISE THIS YEAR. AS WE HAVE EVERY YEAR, EVERY TEACHER IN BOTH SCHOOLS WILL RECEIVE THEIR $500 ANNUAL GRANT TO HELP OFFSET ANY CLASSROOM EXPENSES.  FEEL FREE TO LOOK AT THE POSTED BUDGET ON OUR WEBSITE AND REACH OUT TO ME IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

OTHER EVENTS, SUCH AS OUR BIGGEST FUNDRAISER OF THE YEAR,  READ-A-THON, ALONG WITH OUR BOOK FAIR, ARE IN THE WORKS FOR A VIRTUAL DEBUT LATER IN THE YEAR. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES REGARDING THOSE.

AS ALWAYS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT US WITH ANY QUESTIONS OR SUGGESTIONS. WE APPRECIATE YOUR PATIENCE AND SUPPORT AS WE NAVIGATE THROUGH THESE CHANGES.
